Passivation improves stainless steel’s corrosion resistance, which can be compromised by the presence of exogenous surface contaminants, including grease, dirt, iron and other mechanical particles inherent in the metal fabrication process. Passivation of stainless steel includes chemically treating the surface with a mild oxidant, removing free iron and other particles and encouraging the formation of a chromium-rich corrosion-resistant layer.
